A Trainee’s Christmas List: What to ask for from a Training Contract
Christmas will soon be upon us and, with this in mind, I have come up with a ‘wish list’ prospective trainee solicitors might have in mind when looking for a training contract and how we are able to deliver these things at Cripps Pemberton Greenish.
- High quality work
This is arguably one of the most important things that trainees look for and is therefore number one on my list. At Cripps Pemberton Greenish, we act for a range of clients across our core practice areas of Real Estate, Private Client and Corporate. Our real estate clients range from landed estates, to residential developments and the retail sector. Our private client practice includes advising on taxation and wills in Private Wealth, matrimonial matters in our Family team, and employment disputes in our Employment team. The Corporate team assist shareholders and directors on all aspects relating to their business and projects. Specialist teams advise on commercial contracts, as well as intellectual property and data protection. Clients include Eurotunnel, the English National Ballet and HSBC.
- Client contact
A reason often cited by many for choosing a career as a solicitor over that of a barrister is the level of client contact available in a law firm. This has certainly been my experience at Cripps Pemberton Greenish where trainees will often have direct contact with clients. This occurs in a range of ways, from sitting in on meetings, sending emails and making calls, to attending client events. There is a clear message that runs through the firm: being a lawyer at Cripps Pemberton Greenish is all about the people. The firm provides a high standard of work but with an approachable, human element and trainees are encouraged to develop this approachability with clients from the outset.
Our training contract is not one where trainees spend their days putting together court bundles. There are ample opportunities to take on a level of responsibility. In my first 6 weeks at the firm I completed on a licence and then liaised with the client and solicitors for the other side on post completion matters. This was all done under supervision, of course, which meant that I was always supported should I have any questions – which leads to the next item on the list…
- Friendly work environment
There is definitely a culture of openness at the firm. From trainees to partners, people are always willing to help should you require it, which makes the transition to starting a training contract so much easier. Beyond this, ‘Enjoy’ is one of our four firm values (alongside Care, Imagine and Achieve) and as part of this, trainees are part of a ‘flash mob’. We organise spontaneous fun events across our offices – examples in the past include hosting a summer barbecue, organising a Halloween party with games and prizes, and providing Pimm’s and strawberries and cream during the Wimbledon tournament. These small touches alongside the general culture of the firm – and the extra day of annual leave should you have a week day birthday! – make Cripps Pemberton Greenish a truly enjoyable place to work.
- Charitable opportunities
There are numerous opportunities available at Cripps Pemberton Greenish to allow employees to give back. As part of our ‘Care’ value, each employee is given one day each year to use to volunteer in the local community. Trainees are encouraged to participate and have been finding appropriate projects for staff to get involved with. Additionally, every year staff are asked to vote for our charity of the year, which for 2019 is CLIC Sargent. Employees take part in fundraising activities, which have included a Bake-Off competition, a weekly flower auction and ‘Tour de Cripps’ – which involved staff cycling from our Tunbridge Wells office to our London office before heading on to Paris. This year, the equity partners have agreed to match the amount raised. The charitable aspects of the firm truly represent what Cripps Pemberton Greenish stands for – a law firm that really is all about ‘the people’.
